Women in Uzbekistan forcibly sterilized

Terrible Uzbek doctors performed surgery on the sly - immediately after birth or during caesarean section. When he awoke from the anesthesia, new mothers were not even aware that most will never give birth. Call frankness few frightened women managed to BBC journalist Natalia Antelava. But, alas, much evidence to the case is not added - in the eyes of the Uzbek authorities is "only private stories, not backed by any facts." In addition, the women themselves, and even call themselves human rights activists fear, fear of arrest, "the disclosure of classified information."

Meanwhile, about a "secret program" the Uzbek government for the forced sterilization of women giving birth has conversations conducted since 2003. According to human rights defenders in the country and then began a massive campaign to "violent infertility." Then it rates declined slightly due to public protests, but in 2009 was followed by a new round. According to human rights, to the ground it does not activate the acceptance of the case was the decision of President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov on April 13, 2009 "On additional measures to protect the health of mother and child, the formation of a healthy generation."

Interestingly, in this document, not a single word about contraception or sterilization .  Resolution in the most general phrases requires a government commission "critically examine the activities of the Women's Committee at all levels to conduct their prophylactic and advocacy for the protection of mother and child health and to take measures to enhance their performance and increase personal responsibility of its chairperson, deputy khokims (heads of administrations - Authors . ) Regions, cities and districts in this important task of national importance " .  But as a result of this "vague" supreme instructions followed very specific actions: the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan issued a decree on the resumption of sterilization, calling it "the most effective form of contraception" .  After that, according to anonymous sources in the country have been forcibly sterilized tens of thousands of Uzbek women of reproductive age .  The operation was conducted without the knowledge of patients - usually by ligation of the fallopian tubes after cesarean section, but some even removed the uterus .

Despite that many patients do not even know that they have done with the rumors still circulated. And today, many Uzbeks prefer to give birth at home without the help of local doctors. Even the risk to life and unsanitary conditions scare them less than the sterility imposed by the authorities.

In the course of investigative journalism British radio journalist managed to get a verbal recognition of several women that were sterilized after the birth of their second or third child. In operation they did not give consent, and even learned about it after the fact. Uzbeks complain that, after learning that his wife is no longer able to have children, some of them threw their husbands. One of the few real names appearing in this dark history - a resident of Uzbekistan Gyulbahor Zavidova. When she was 28, she died immediately after birth newborn son. Gyulbahor long I tried to get pregnant again, but nothing worked. Then she decided to take a medical examination, which revealed that the woman was sterilized immediately after childbirth. The husband did not look unhappy that his wife "castrated" without her knowledge, and threw it.

Also, the British correspondent has learned that in Uzbekistan there is a distribution list from the authorities, according to which every physician should be sterilized on a monthly basis for at least two women. And those of the men in white coats who will sabotage the order, threatening reprisals and fines.

In its broadcast journalist "Bi-bi-si" refers to the victims of an inhuman regime and calls for Uzbek women not to keep a terrible secret. However, it is willing to talk about it only the Uzbek women, who managed to flee the country to avoid being subjected to the inhuman procedure.

Official Uzbekistan denies that the program of sterilization of women giving birth has ever existed, and refers to the fact that the youngest daughter of President Karimov Lola - Ambassador of UNESCO and the head of the children's charity. However, according to UN statistics, the birth rate in the country in recent years actually fell substantially.

Well, the story is not new in principle. In the United States until 1970, forcibly sterilized too prolific Indian women to similar measures sometimes resorted some overcrowded states in India. Uzbekistan - one of the poorest and most populous former Soviet republics, with around 30 million citizens. It is understandable why the government does not want to allow the growth of the population.

Trying to find a drop of truth in this unsympathetic stories, I asked the same question to two people - representatives of the Uzbek embassy in Moscow and Uzbekistan gastarbaytershe called Mubarak, who work in our capital. The question was: "Is it true that in your country forcibly sterilized women have already given birth? "At the embassy I clearly and categorically said that" sterilization in Uzbekistan made exclusively on medical grounds, with the consent of the patient and her husband. " But Mubarak deep in thought, and admitted: "Yes, to be honest, a lot of this and fled from their homeland ... But do not call my name, please! ".

A historic mosque imam in Moscow said that in the light of Islam, which is the title of worship in the country, such a procedure - a great sin.
