Vitamin D deficiency in the first 26 weeks of pregnancy increases the risk of severe high blood pressure preeclampsia. That is the conclusion drawn by researchers from the University of Pittsburgh in the United States.
Preeclampsia
During the largest study to date on this topic, the researchers analyzed vitamin D levels in blood samples from 700 pregnant women, pre-eclampsia later victims, as well as 3,000 expectant mothers who gave birth without the development of dangerous complications.
On average, the risk of developing pre-eclampsia among all women was 0, 6%. However, for those pregnant women whose levels of vitamin D was sufficient risk of preeclampsia was reduced by 40%. And it was a severe form of this complication, as the relationship between vitamin D levels and mild preeclampsia was found. Note that although scientists have proved the effect of vitamin D levels in women at risk of preeclampsia, a causal relationship has not been proved.
"For decades, vitamin D has been known as a useful component for bone health, but in the last 10-15 years, science has proven that it is necessary not only bones, - says study author Dr. Lisa Bodnar. - In particular, the normal level of vitamin D is important for healthy pregnancy. We also found that moderate and severe pre-eclampsia have different roots. Of course, for the mother and child is more dangerous severe form of the disorder, and all the more important to know that an effective method of preventing it is easy to maintain the level of vitamin D. However, we need to conduct additional studies, so I will not automatically recommend that all pregnant women to buy vitamin supplements. " (READ MORE)
