Less educated people are aging faster

The head of the team of researchers from University College London's Professor Andrew Steptoe explained that "the level of education largely determines social class, and our research indicates that lasting impact on human living conditions in the lower strata of society aggravates the aging process at the cellular level."

The researchers took blood samples from more than 400 people aged 53 to 75 years old and measure the brightness of parts of DNA located at the ends of chromosomes. These parts are called telomeres. The shorter they are, the faster a person ages.

People with a low level of education had shorter telomeres. That is, the aging process have proceeded faster. On telomere length did not affect either the social or economic status.

The relationship between health and socio-economic situation of the specialists discovered a long time. For example, they noted that the poorer people are, on average smoke more, less and less engaged in sports visit doctors.

According to the head of research Andrew Steptoe, education is a kind of marker of social class that people acquire early in life.

According to the director of the British Heart Foundation Jeremy Pearson, "this study confirms the need to address social inequality and the place of residence or income of a person in any case should not accelerate the aging process."
