A study involving nearly four hundred women - volunteers has proven positive impact epidural anesthesia during childbirth. A team from the Clinical School of Medicine in Sydney examined women who gave birth between 2005 and 2008.
The results showed that mothers who undergo anesthesia, escaped ruptures of muscles. Damage to these muscles can lead to later problems with urinary incontinence. Pelvic muscles become weak and can not properly support the bladder. Besides, muscle tears may result in chronic constipation, as well as problems in the sexual sphere.
Researchers led by Dr Clara Shek suggested a possible cause of this phenomenon. Women under the influence epidural anesthesia I do not feel the pain of labor can clearly follow the instructions of doctors and midwives. As a consequence, the potential risk of excessive stress during labor decreases. Muscles suffer fewer injuries.
The findings are published in BJOG, leading journal of obstetrics.
