For many years it was believed that the well-being of people depends on the lunar cycle. This assumption is reinforced by a number of studies, the latest of which was held earlier this year. However, scientists are skeptical, decided to double-check the results of the scientific work of their colleagues, did absolutely the opposite conclusion.
Full Moon
Experts from the German Institute of Psychiatry, the Max Planck Society drew attention to the contradictory information concerning this issue. For example, last year's survey of Swiss biologists from the University of Basel, watching the 33 volunteers, indicating that the full moon phase of deep sleep duration was reduced by 30%. A similar view is held by some scientists from other countries, but their opponents are exactly the same experimentally proved that people sleep worse, on the contrary, the new moon.
To dot the «i» and put an end to long-standing dispute, the German researchers have conducted the most large-scale experiment with volunteers. They attracted 1265 volunteers to explore their sleep quality using electroencephalography. This high-tech equipment "reads" information about the brain activity of volunteers, their eyeballs movements specific to a particular stage of sleep, hormonal changes, and, in particular, the level of melatonin and cortisol.
After analyzing the data, the researchers came to the conclusion that Moon phase did not affect sleep. This conclusion was soon confirmed by the study of previously unpublished studies by other scientists who have studied the quality of sleep in total, over 20,000 nights. The results of their experiments in line with those of German experts, whose report is published in the journal Current Biology. (READ MORE)
