Women are more likely to get into a nursing home

Women are 40% more likely than men are patients of nursing homes. This is due to the fact that they marry men older than themselves, who die before their wives.

How do I find researchers from Queen's University in Belfast, older women 40% more likely than men are placed in nursing home . Many of the ladies in the age after the death of the couple are already unable to care for themselves as for financial reasons, as well as on the physical. But even if their older age and their husbands are alive, the wives are too weak to help them in times of sickness.

In the past, up to three quarters of all inhabitants nursing homes   were women. Experts attribute this to the fact that men do not want to care about them, because they believe it is traditionally women's shares. But the Irish scientists have refuted this myth. It's not that the stronger sex finds room in a nursing home with something unenviable. Just at this age most men are already dead.

The researchers followed up 20 830 pairs of 65 for six years. These pairs of women were, on average, five years younger than their husbands. During the entire period of observation in the nursing home moved to 416 people. It turned out that women are 40% more likely than men to provide patients of these institutions.

But the main reason to move to a nursing home for both men and women was the loneliness caused by the death of a spouse. That's only husband died more often women, simply because they were older. And the remaining second half without a woman often does not feel strong enough to go through life alone.

However, most modern couples is the same age. So that in the future the proportion of men and women in nursing homes will be equal.
