Scientists from Denmark discovered another aspect of the potential harm to the stress suffered by women during pregnancy. Experts believe that the hormones produced by the body expectant mother in response to stress can have a negative impact on brain development in the fetus.
Stress during pregnancy
This study was conducted within the precincts of the University of Aarhus. Of the more than one million births, experts have identified tens of thousands of cases of children born after suffering a stress their mothers during their pregnancy. Nearly 22,000 women have lost a spouse or other close relative, and another 14 thousand in this period learned that the next of kin had been diagnosed with cancer, heart attack or stroke.
Analysis of these data as well as further study of the lives of children prompted the researchers to believe that the pregnancy is contraindicated stress, especially in the first trimester. Observations have shown that it can contribute to the development of schizophrenia in the unborn child. For example, the children of those study participants who experienced the death of a close relative during the first trimester of pregnancy, 67% more likely to develop schizophrenia. What is significant: if women are in the same situation in another pregnancy, the impact of such stress was observed.
According to the head of research Preben Bo Mortensen, at an early stage of pregnancy a protective barrier between mother and fetus are not fully formed. Therefore, the stress hormones produced by the body of the future mother can greatly influence the developing brain of the fetus. This makes the stress at the beginning of pregnancy is especially insidious in its consequences. (READ MORE)
